Our hand-crafted Outhouses are very sturdy and built to last for many years. These stunning Garden Shed Outhouse Toilets can be adapted for Composting, Chemical, or old-fashioned Hole-in the-Ground usage. Many families find the Sawdust Composting Toilet Outhouse configuration to be an easy odor free solution. It is remarkable how quickly the sawdust and waste break down into soil.
Our standard outhouse is 4 feet x 4 feet in floor size, with a shed roof about 8.5 feet tall at the front and 6.5 feet at the rear and comes with one screened window. They are usually mounted on 4×4 pressure treated skids so they can be moved around your property if necessary.
This includes an enclosed bench with a soft-close seat, a waste bin, and a sawdust bin, as well as a storage area for the bin lids.
After using the composting toilet outhouse, simply open the sawdust bin, cover the waste with a couple of handfuls of sawdust and close the lids. When necessary, simply open the front door of the waste compartment, slide out the waste bin, cover it and dump it onto a compost pile nearby. Then cover the waste with more sawdust, hay, straw or compost. The waste breaks down into soil remarkably quickly.
There are only a few laws under the Ontario Building Code that cover outhouse toilets. One that states all Class 1 Sewage Systems (“earth pit” privies) must be located at least three metres from any property line. If an outhouse has been around for many years, it is grandfathered, and the three-metre rule doesn’t apply.
There are no laws about how often someone needs to move a privy style Outhouse in Ontario. However, the Code does say that the Outhouse privy must be maintained. This applies to any class of sewage system. And although Code only governs new construction and any work on existing Outhouse systems, if authorities deemed an Outhouse unsafe, you could be required to make it safe or bring it up to current standards—and possibly move it.
In other words, maintain your outhouse and there should be no issues with the Building Code. Commercial outhouse usage (such as commercial campgrounds) falls under different regulations. Call your local building department for more information.
Shipping is an available option of unassembled outhouse sections, or in some cases we can ship the fully assembled units. We can ship within a 300 km radius of Markdale, ON. We can load these onto your trailer, then you will unload at your end usually with a tractor loader. Or two to three men can handle the unassembled sections. We can ship the fully assembled units using third party self-unloading shippers, but this can be an expensive option. Message us for details.
If you’re planning on picking up your outhouse and assembling it yourself, you’ll need a standard utility trailer and some ratchet style tie-down straps. We’ll go over the simple outhouse assembly process with you here in the yard until you are comfortable with each step and help to load each section onto your trailer and get it securely strapped down for the ride home.
Have a trailer? Skip the wait and pick up your outhouse directly from our shop. Our Flat Pack Pickup option lets you load your entire outhouse onto a standard flatbed or utility trailer and haul it to your property yourself — saving on delivery costs and getting you set up faster.
⚠ Note: The flat pack does not fit in the back of a standard pickup truck — a trailer is required.
Once you’ve hauled your flat pack home, assembly is surprisingly straightforward. With two people and a screw gun, you can have a fully standing outhouse in roughly an hour — no special tools, no contractor required. The structure comes in three main sections: floor, walls, and roof. Once those are locked together, you simply add the bench and waste bin system to finish the interior. The whole process is designed to be intuitive and satisfying — like a well-engineered kit that actually makes sense.

Everything you need to know about the sawdust composting toilet system — the clean, natural, and time-tested choice for Ontario cottages, camps, and rural properties.
When you invest in an outhouse, you are investing in a structure that needs to stand up to Ontario winters, summer heat, and decades of use. Here is what sets us apart.
We have been crafting outdoor structures for over three decades. That kind of experience shows in every joint, every panel, and every roof line. We know what holds up in Ontario's climate — and we build accordingly.
Our outhouses are not assembled from thin, mass-produced components. Every structure is built to be sturdy, solid, and genuinely long-lasting. Customers regularly tell us their outhouses look as good after ten years as the day they picked them up.
We take pride in the details. Our outhouses feature tight joinery, clean trim work, and the kind of finished appearance that reflects genuine craftsmanship rather than rushed production. These are structures you will be proud to have on your property.
We use quality Ontario pine and cedar throughout our builds — materials that are naturally durable, beautiful, and well-suited to the Canadian climate. Cedar is naturally resistant to moisture and insects, making it an ideal choice for an outdoor structure that will see all four seasons.
Not every property or every need is the same. We offer custom sizing and layout options so your outhouse fits your specific situation — whether that is a compact 3x3, a larger 4x5 for a family cottage, or a special configuration for accessibility or a specific composting system.
When you contact Ontario Garden Sheds, you are talking directly with the people who build your outhouse — not a call centre. We are happy to walk you through every option, answer every question, and make sure you get exactly what you need.
Real customers. Real properties across Ontario. Real results.
“We picked up our outhouse on a trailer last August and had it assembled the same afternoon. The instructions were clear, the fit was perfect, and the quality of the cedar is outstanding. Don walked us through the whole assembly process before we left — that kind of personal service is rare these days. Highly recommend.”

“We have been using our Ontario Garden Sheds outhouse for three summers now and it still looks brand new. The sawdust composting system is so much easier than we expected — no smell, no fuss, and the whole family has gotten comfortable with it. Best investment we made for the cottage property.”

“The craftsmanship on our outhouse is genuinely impressive. The trim work, the door, the window — everything is tight and well-finished. You can tell these are built by people who take pride in their work. We have had several neighbours ask us where we got it.”

“I was a bit skeptical about the flat pack assembly but it went together in about 90 minutes with my son and a drill. The sections fit together perfectly and the finished product is rock solid. Very well thought out design. We went with the sawdust composting option and it has been completely odour-free all season.”

“Don was incredibly helpful in guiding us toward the right size and configuration for our property. We ended up with a custom layout that works perfectly for our needs. The cedar is beautiful and the whole structure feels like it will last a lifetime. Five stars without hesitation.”

“We have purchased two outhouses from Ontario Garden Sheds over the years — one for our farm and one for a remote bush lot. Both are still standing strong after years of hard use. The quality is consistent and the price is fair for what you get. We would not go anywhere else.”
