Our hand-crafted Outhouses are very sturdy and built to last for many years. These stunning Garden Shed Outhouse Toilets can be adapted for Composting, Chemical, or old-fashioned Hole-in the-Ground usage. Many families find the Sawdust Composting Toilet Outhouse configuration to be an easy odor free solution. It is remarkable how quickly the sawdust and waste break down into soil.
Our standard outhouse is 4 feet x 4 feet in floor size, with a shed roof about 8.5 feet tall at the front and 6.5 feet at the rear and comes with one screened window. They are usually mounted on 4×4 pressure treated skids so they can be moved around your property if necessary.
Our outhouses can be used at the cottage, on the farm, next to your Tiny Home, campsite, “glamp site”, or anywhere else you need an outhouse facility. They can be shipped with or without the sawdust composting toilet option. Ontario Outhouses can be plumbed in with a regular toilet, or set up with many of the electric composters, chemical composters or waste burners on the market.
This includes an enclosed bench with a soft-close seat, a waste bin, and a sawdust bin, as well as a storage area for the bin lids.
After using the composting toilet outhouse, simply cover the waste with a couple of handfuls of sawdust. When necessary, simply open the front door of the waste compartment, slide out the waste bin, cover it, and dump it onto a compost pile nearby. Then cover the waste with more sawdust, hay, straw or compost. The waste breaks down into soil remarkably quickly.
There are only a few laws under the Ontario Building Code that cover outhouse toilets. One that states all Class 1 Sewage Systems (“earth pit” privies) must be located at least three meters from any property line. If an outhouse has been around for many years, it is grandfathered, and the three-metre rule doesn’t apply.
There are no laws about how often someone needs to move a privy style Outhouse in Ontario. However, the Code does say that the Outhouse privy must be maintained. This applies to any class of sewage system. And although Code only governs new construction and any work on existing Outhouse systems, if authorities deemed an Outhouse unsafe, you could be required to make it safe or bring it up to current standards—and possibly move it.
In other words, maintain your outhouse and there should be no issues with the Building Code. Commercial outhouse usage (such as commercial campgrounds) falls under different regulations. Call your local building department for more information.
Shipping is an available option of unassembled outhouse sections, or in some cases we can ship the fully assembled units. We can ship within a 300 km radius of Markdale, ON. We can load these onto your trailer, then you will unload at your end usually with a tractor loader. Or two to three men can handle the unassembled sections. We can ship the fully assembled units using third party self-unloading shippers, but this can be an expensive option. Message us for details.
If you’re planning on picking up your outhouse and assembling it yourself, you’ll need a standard utility trailer and some ratchet style tie-down straps. We’ll go over the simple outhouse assembly process with you here in the yard until you are comfortable with each step and help to load each section onto your trailer and get it securely strapped down for the ride home.
